Smeet Ale

Smeet Ale label

As mysterious as the annual return of swallows to Capistrano, the migratory Arctic Smeet Frog ranks among the world's natural wonders. Scientists have long pondered just why the flying furry Smeet chooses the Huron River as its Winter nesting ground. Not only is this unusual frog capable of sustained flight, it is also the only amphibian possessing a furry coat. Numbering in the hundreds of thousands, Smeets are not on the endangered species list. Biologists have counted a stable population for decades. They were thought to be, at one time, a mainstay of the Winter diet of Native Americans who camped by the waters of the Huron. They are now a protected species, and the hunting of Smeets is strictly forbidden. Since Smeets leave the water only at night, it is unusual to hear or see one, as they spend their daylight hours nestled safely among the rocks at the river bottom. However, at night, if you are lucky, you may from time to time hear their feeble twittering croak as you stroll along the Huron River banks.
